About

Despo Ierodiakonou is an Associate Professor in the Department of Primary Care and Population Health at the University of Nicosia Medical School, where she has worked since November 2020.

Dr Ierodiakonou qualified (MD) from the Medical School of the University of Crete, Greece, and holds a PhD in Epidemiology from the University of Groningen, the Netherlands, alongside an MSc in Environmental Health and Epidemiology. As a postdoctoral fellow she worked with research groups at Harvard University, Imperial College London, and the University of Crete.

Her research focuses on the epidemiology of asthma, allergies, and COPD — identifying the genetic, biological, and environmental factors behind chronic respiratory disease, alongside systematic review and meta-analysis of large-scale datasets. She trained and practiced as a general practitioner in Crete, Greece, with a continuing focus on primary care research into respiratory and chronic disease prevention and management.
